Camera HA mod not responding

I followed the Gary Honis Canon T4i astro mod video and did a HA mod. put everything back together and The camera does nothing when I turn it on, I dont know what areas in the camera could make this happen so I'm just gonna go through all the things that I think might have gone wrong. I'm fairly certain I have all ribbon cables put back in correctly but not 100% sure I guess, also the torque screws before taking out the camera sensor might not be tightened right, a few small plastic bits fell off around the sd card any bettery doors and one under the rubber to the top right of the screen, and also I'm not completely reassembling the entire camera when I turn it on as in I haven't been putting the plastic all together but all the electronics are connected the battery door and sd card door are shut. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) (There is also a small rattling inside the camera when I shake it)

That's not good....

By  "The camera does nothing when I turn it on" I presume you mean its totally lifeless, no screen illumination or lit LEDs ?  - I would suggest you run through the procedure again, slowly in order to find out if any of the connectors have been not seated correctly and what part is rattling around inside the camera

Yes no screen or anything I have gone through the process up until taking out the sensor as I am confident that I did that step correctly and also if there was something wrong in there it wouldn't stop the camera from turning on, I feel like the only thing it could be is the ribbon cables around the power switch and/or depending on how the sd and battery door sensors work if they are like light based the plastic pieces that fell out around that could be letting in light and stopping it from turning on which I doubt highly.

I would agree with you.  It could be a kink in the printed cables, or the camera is receiving a message suggesting the case is open or something hasn't closed properly and won't power on.  Not sure what's the way forward really, other than reseating cables etc there is not a lot more you can do.  If after the camera has been put back together its still bricked then sadly that's it unless you take it to a specialist, but then the cost of his time and any parts might make it prohibitive, and it would be better to look for an already modified camera on the classified section.

"I'm fairly certain I have all ribbon cables put back in correctly but not 100% sure I guess, "

Did you mark the ribbon cable insertion depth with a Sharpie, as recommended in the written instructions ?

I've sometimes missed attaching the single Sensor Cleaning ribbon on the LPF-1 filter.

Might stop the camera working if you forgot to disable that before modding.

"a few small plastic bits fell off around the sd card any bettery doors and one under the rubber to the top right of the screen,"

Put this one down to experience for the next camera.....:-<

No I didn't mark the depth, wish I would have but they all kinda clicked into place and there are little pieces on the sides that come out that are supposed to go into little indents in the connectors which they are. If by the single sensor cleaning ribbon on the lpf-1 you mean the cable that comes out of the filter stack thing, then that is in correctly as far as I remember.

Yea unfortunately thinking that myself. If I might have touched the flux capacitor would that make it not turn on?

A common cause of Canon cameras not turning on relates to an earlier post about the Battery and SD covers, there is a microswitch operated by a tiny pin on the door of the battery cover that can easily be broken off.

Alan

I've tried depressing the switches with toothpicks manually and it didn't work unfortunately

UPDATE: I just got the camera to turn on but now when I try to take a picture or use Live view it displays Error 70: try turning the camera on and off or reseating the battery. Obviously this is better than the camera not turning on but still need some help

(The Ribbon cable leading to the battery was barely off. It was slightly crooked)

Also I did not glue down the torque screws connected to the sensor he says it might change focus. Will this happen and if so how fast.

ITS WORKING!! Wow I never thought I would get it working. After I got it to turn on and it set error 70 I went back in reseated every cable and made 10000% sure they were perfect came out and it works and the mod was successful! If your camera isn't turning on after a mod CHECK THE CABLES I thought for sure they were perfect but cable F was slightly crooked. You will think the cables are perfect and there is no way they are wrong but 99% of the time its them trust me they are wrong.

Well done !

Just to repeat for anyone else contemplating a diy mod.

If (as recommended in the written Honis instructions) you mark a line on the ribbon cables with a thin Sharpie where they enter the sockets, you can see if they are crooked or not fully reinserted.

"Also I did not glue down the torque screws connected to the sensor he says it might change focus. Will this happen and if so how fast."

You'll have to explain what you mean by "glue".

The tilt of the sensor is adjusted at the factory, apparently they always need slight adjustment by tightening the Torx screws by different amounts.

Hopefully you measured the different Torx screw positions, otherwise you'll have Sensor Tilt.

If you haven't moved the sensor towards the shutter, or added a clear or Baader filter to compensate for the removal of the LPF2 filter, then Autofocus on lenses will be incorrect.

And manual focusing through the viewfinder.

And lenses may not manually reach infinity focus.

On a telescope, focus with LiveView will always be correct.

It only takes one of the tabs on a printed cable not to be making contact.  Glad to hear the camera is working

In the video form of the tutorial he glues down the screws again to keep the camera from changing focus he says.

I will have to check if I have sensor tilt everything looks fine right now though.
