FTP Server

If this is in the wrong place please move it.

I've noticed a few times when folk are wanting to transfer data between each other (TJ's M31 springs to mind) they are uploading the data to a server somewhere, the recipient then has to download it.

If you're involved in this, why not set up an FTP server on your own machine ? something like filezilla would do

Server http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server

Client http://filezilla-project.org/download.php

then when you want to transfer data to each other, it's just a matter of setting up an account for each user and they download the data direct from you and only use your upload speed. It's much quicker and easier than uploading to public servers.

We've got a great forum software that will (hopefully) be going live over the weekend.

Each user will have a certain amount of space allocated to them for images / files / albums etc.

So hopefully we'll have this covered inhouse after the weekend.

Big disadvantage from the perspective of a home user is to run a FTP server you have to change your firewall setting from 'block all inbound requests' to allow port-20/21 access, and then keep the FTP server patched and up to date. Unless you know what you're getting into, using a file-sharing site (or SGL) is a much safer option.

If nothing else, i'd suggest using SFTP to do this rather than plain-vanilla FTP
