Waterproof power

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Quick question. I have one of these power supplies and want to be able to leave it outside whilst the camera goes through the imaging run.

I'm worried about moisture and was wondering if I could place the unit in a waterproof box. My concern is that it may overheat? I had thought about fitting a fan but wouldn't that spoil the integrity of the box?

Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Simon

I keep 2 10A transformers in a small Tupperware without issue. Should be ok although I guess it will depend a bit on the load.

Hi and thanks for your reply. Amp wise I don't think that my rig will be drawing any more than 7amps. Heq5 mount, zwo asiair pro, dslr, mini guide cam. The power supply is rated up to 30 Amps.

Those plastic waterproof enclosures provide virtually no insulation - I keep three power supplies in one when imaging (2 brick type for the equipment and 1 laptop adapter), and they're no warmer than they would be if I were using them indoors.

I would also imagine that those 'proper' power supplies, like the one you linked above have some kind of safety thermal cut off as well?

Over the years, we have stuck up lots of weatherproof boxes, both plastic and metal, very few had fans so I wouldn't worry about that. As Stargazer33 said, don't make the box too snug. If you get a box with plenty of room I can't see overheating being a problem. As it goes, we had to consider the opposite problem so we did install anti-condensation heaters in some instances. I can't see you needing one of those either but if you do get signs of condensation, just leave the lid open when you have finished your run.
