Just got my scope

Recommended Posts

Hi and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Have you downloaded the full synscan hand control manual yet? The manual that comes with the scope is pretty limited and doesn’t give much info.

If you have an Android phone or tablet this app will give the gps and date / time info in the correct format for the mount.

Hi Bob. Welcome to SGL.

You have a very good package there. A suggestion if I may?

Learn the scope first. Indoors in daylight.
Get used to how eyepieces fasten in. Make sure the finder is aligned to the main tube.
You don't want things falling off in the dark.

Then learn about setting up and balancing the mount.
Without correct setup, the gooto will 'go somewhere else'.
Again you can work daylight and indoors.

At this point, if you have the weather, go outside and enjoy the views. But don't try goto. Regard it as a manual scope.

Finally. Start learning your way around the electronics.
Make sure you are familiar with menus, initial setting.
Setup and calibration after power up.
Again working in the warm and light works wonders.
We all make mistakes in the cold and dark.
I have even heard of a few people getting confused about date entry format and telling the scope it is a different month. Not me of course🤣🤣

Once outside, work on nice easy bright targets. Moon, Orion nebula, Pleiaides, etc.
Leave the more difficult stuff until you learn more about the scope and mount.

Above all. Don't try to do everything in one go. The best way to make every session enjoyable is not to tax yourself.
Always have a different target in mind in a different paqrt of the sky. Clouds move. You forget there was a tree in the way, etc.

If something doesn't work. Keep asking the questions.

David.
