Moving from achro to ed

Recommended Posts

Would I see an improvement for general use moving from a 120 Achromat to a 100 Ed doublet? My present scope is a Celestron and I would probably be buying something affordable like a Skywatcher or Altair Ascent.

its for general use on a range of targets. My present mount is a cg4 set up as alt az and the Clear Outside app tells me my sky is Bortle 4.

Hello. When it comes to CA then a good ED will show considerable improvement especially on the brighter targets like Luna.  CA bothers people to a more or lesser degree depending on personal preference. But I know when I got my SW 120 ED then a considerable improvement in viewing experience especially on Luna and brighter planetary targets. For me getting a good ED scope was certainly money well spent to increase my viewing experience.

Hope this helps

On targets such as the moon and planets I think a 100mm ED will perform better than a 120mm achromat (I assume you mean the F/8.3 version ?). On deep sky objects the 120 will still do slightly better.

Unless you need to sell, to found a new telescope. I'd keep your old one, so that you can compare the visual difference between the two telescopes. Might be worth learning to do star tests, so you can learn to see the 5 Seidel optical aberrations if they are in either telescope. Having two telescope I think is a good aid to learning to star test.
