Mak 180 v Vixen VMC200L (v 8 inch SCTs)

Recommended Posts

I have heard very good reports (but haven't done a direct comparison). The VMC200L is an open tube design, allowing faster cool-down time and is less prone to dewing up. Due to its standard focuser there is no mirror tilt at all. It is also quite light (6 kg, much less than the SkyMax 180, and just a touch over the 5.7 kg of the C8)

I tend to think of the VMC200L is a good "all round" telescope rather like an 8" SCT. I think there are better planetary / lunar / double star scopes (and the 180 Mak would be one) but on DSO's it would do well for it's aperture / focal ratio.

I ought to state that I've only had a few short views with a VMC200, nothing sustained.
