I have managed to get this software to work with my Nikon D3200, but I cannot get it to work with my Canon 5D Mk1. Can anyone tell me if this is possible or alternatively is there any other software which will work with the 5D

The list of cameras the software supports doesn't include the 5d mk1 (digic 2 processor). AstroPhotographyTool (APT) does support the mk1 but you need a serial cable or DSUSB controller for long bulb exposures.

Have you read Paul Beskeens ‘................... of Canon DSLRs’ on paul beskeen.com. Seems a DIY lead may be required. BackyardEOS would perhaps be a better option although it is not free.
