6 inch 3mm wall pipe at 1000mm thick enough for a pier

If its steel or aluminium I'd say yes. What material are you thinking of? Also, it would be helpful to know the scope and mount you're using.

I think you'd be fine with mild steel. My pier is 3mm square steel bedded in postcrete and its super solid. It would easily carry a 6" F15 refractor or a 12" F5 or 6 Newt. Infact i can pretty much swing from it without any problems.

I think so too. One of the things I am struggling with at the moment is that I made my pier with too wide a diameter, 11", now I am having problems with the scope hitting the pier/metalwork when pointing at high altitudes.

Don't forget to make your pier tall enough, otherwise you won't be able to see over the walls of your observatory, something else I have been struggling with.
