Jupiter's fifth moon?

Has anyone managed to spot Amalthea (or other, non-Galilean satellites)? I feel like having Jupiter so low with terrible seeing is not enough of a challenge :shock: .. I guess one would make an occultation bar?

I've never seen it and I'm not sure its possible through amateur gear.

The proximity to the planet (its one of closer moons) would cause problems observing it, I'd guess?

Cheers Ant, I should have tried that really!! Theres no sign of Almalthea on there, maybe it is too close to Jupiter?

thanks all for responses.. I think I was confused.. the 5th brightest moon is Himalia, which is, I believe, within visual range 14 mag (of at least my 10")! One for a very dark and crisp night..

I'm not so sure Phillip, I've had a dig around and a few places say that only the 4 main moons are observable with amateur gear (this is what I'd thought). Almalthea was the only other other moon to be discovered by observation (all they others were found by space probes or photography) and that was discovered using a 38" scope.

I can go down to mag +15.9 with a 6.4 ep and 2x barlow and I can't see it
