Just did a bit more digging, what you cant see is a very large crater named Stickney, the maiden name of Hall's (who discovered phobos in August 1877) wife. The striations are cracks probably resulting from this very large crater. There's an excellent photo at the top of this website page:

I think you are correct that it has something to do with the Stickney crater Steve. I seem to remember watching or reading something a little while ago about this.

From what I remember, the other object that hit Phobos broke up on impact and the some of the debris scoured out the channels you can see as they continued on past the sides of Phobos.

Well at least thats what they think....and it seems to be what I remember.
