I'd just have a look at the hard core transitions in both the main and satellite galaxies but the less bright stuff is really great.

Point taken Olly.

DBE seemed to make it worse as did Gradient Exterminator.They both resulted in better detail in the Galaxy but the background was still a mess.

I fiddled around between PI and Photoshop, not spending a huge amount of time on it.

A man in a hurry could just make a bottom layer, put a very big blur on it and then erase the top core with a soft brush in several iterations.
