Yes Steve, a good , but old book is Handbook for the telescope maker by N.E. Howard. I have used It on many occasions and it has been invaluable. And it is a good idea to buy a cheap mirror and re-figure it your self, go for it it's the best feeling in the world when you look through your scope for the first time and realise you created that.

Sorry Paul, I have just reread this thread and spotted your post...

Thanks for the book recommendation :D

Steve

Many years ago I used the N E Howard book recommended by Paul to grind and polish a 6 ins F8 mirror.

This included making an artificial star gizmo for testing the figure of the mirror ( Ronchi test if I remember rightly - it passed the test by the way).

I got half way through building the mount /tube, then the kids and a change of job got in the way. Never finished the project, and the mirrror got binned when we moved house.

I did really enjoy making the mirror though and wish I'd kept the mirror to complete the project now my interest in astronomy has returned.

Good luck.

MD
