Point solving star catalogues

Asking on here to give Derek a rest from being showered with PMs :)

Just sorting out stuff to get the 10Micron up and running and investing in Pin Point and wondering which catalogue folks recommend, the info I've found so far seems a bit dated but may still apply ?

The one recommended is GSC11 smaller than the others. Not so accurate but fast  and as good as you need. Sorry thought it was mentioned in that text.

I have UCAC4 as well but not as good or fast. And USNO A2.0 same, not as good.

Couple of contradictory statements here.

Another point, presumably this includes the whole sky, is it possible / worth just downloading the bit I need.

Not really. The first is true is you want rough alignment anywhere in the sky i.e object centering. The second is true is you want highly accurate positions, of say an asteroid, but may fail for lack of stars if you have a small field of view in areas well away from the galactic plane.
