I seem to have an engraving in my mind showing an observing platform at the rim of the telescope but I've probably just confused this with one of Hershel's monsters.

The engraving that you recall is indeed of Herschel's 40 foot Telescope and shows a Gentleman in a Top Hat, peering into the tube, from a cradle

There is a large feature on Lord Rosse in this months Sky at Night magazine.
