Camera Tripod

I have just acquired a Vixen Polarie second hand and realised that  I would probably benefit from a better tripod - my current one is >15 years old and looking at Mr Google it is clear that things have moved on.  

Would appreciate any recommendations for a suitable tripod that would take the ball head necessary for the Polarie + what should I be looking for in a good tripod for this and general photography? Thanks.

I, like yourself, still undecided as to what to get?
