I'd guess that many people would suggest something like the Skywatcher ED80 on a HEQ5.  It really depends on your budget though.  I'm sure the other recommendation you'd get would be to buy a copy of "Making Every Photon Count" first, read that and then decide where you want to go with things.

A decent mount really comes first.  You could forget the telescope and just use camera lenses to start with.  There are quite a few SGL members who use decent older Pentax-thread lenses that can be bought on ebay for reasonable prices.  It's fairy easy to find an adaptor that will convert the M42 fitting to the Canon EF mount.  You just need one that will preserve the ability to focus at infinity.
