April 13, 2015: Solar lunchtime with flare, proms and spots

Recommended Posts

Just had a session during lunchtime. At the beginning I spotted a very bright spot near the western limb. Looked like a farewell blast (or "I'm not dead yet!" protest ;)) from one of the smaller ARs that have been visible to drag attention away from the new gorilla on the block. Sure enough, as the session progressed, the light of this flare (C-class?) faded leaving a trail of dark plasma on the disk. The big new AR now took centre stage, and apart from the big sunspots a load of plage and a thin mirrored questionmark of a filament stood out. More interestingly, another sunspot has crept round the eastern limb, in the wake of the big AR, and a ridge of low, bright proms was visible just south of the new sunspot hinting at even more activity just round the corner. Further south on the eastern limb a huge tree prom stood out, with a small loop just to its north. On the western side of the disk, a few filaments were visible, and northwards another one, but the centre of the disk is curiously quiet. Maybe I am missing some detail because the skies were pretty hazy, with a large halo showing. Still well worth a look

Nice one Michael, you certainly seem to be getting a good run of sunny weather of late  Nice picture by the way.

I don't know if its my eyes but cloudy skies look very different to me these days, the different layers appear very distinguishable from one another giving an enhanced HD3D effect.
