Guiding on a comet

Seen a few threads about guiding on a comet and tried it last night on Lovejoy only to be told by phd2 that the star was lost after a split second. Tried a few diferent exposures with no success.

Im using a qhy5l-ii colour on a finderscope.

Anyone any tips on what settings I could use to give this another go when the skies clear?

Just guide on it with the same RA/DEC settings as you would for a star.

However, I increased the exposure time to get a decent core for PHD to lock on to (3 or 4 seconds), the guiding was a bit lumpy but it worked.

I just selected the comet as the guide star in PHD and it just worked. I did need to used 3 second exposures in order to get a decent S/N ratio.

Thanks both, worked fine tonight but i think the focus on the guide scope may have been a bit out yesterday which may have caused my problem.
