My Favourite................JUPITER!

As a newbie, can anyone tell me what YEAR Jupiter will be ideal for viewing?

And will i see much with a 114mm Newt?

I'm getting a twitch just thinking of my first views of the god of planets! :jupiter:

:jupiter: is a summer visitor at present, currently in Sagittarius, so should appear in the dawn sky in a few months. You wont miss it, there will be plenty of activity on here with folks trying to image it, Unfortunately :jupiter: will be low in the sky for the UK, but you will have better views being further South

Jupiter won't be ideal until its moved to the likes of Gemini, Taurus etc and thats 5 or 6 years away. That said after 2009 it should be getting higher and higher each year - can't wait!

From September 2009 - 2017, Stellarium shows Jupiter fairly high up in the right months of the year (the winter!).

Yes indeed, Jupiter is the greatest! It wasn't great last year, but this year I don't think it will even clear the houses on my horizon! I believe things improve after 2009...

I am at 38 deg North, so should get good views this summer.

According to the chart in 'Turn Left at Orion' Jupiter will be as follows:

Season Location in sky

Summer 2008 low southeast

Autumn 2008 low southwest

Autumn 2009 southwest

Autumn 2010 high south

Autumn 2011 east

Winter 2012 west

Autumn 2012 east

etc. etc.

Winter 2014 high southeast

Spring 2014 west

Based upon that, I'd say a little way off yet!
