Insurance when taking kit abroad?

Hi all,

I'm off to a cottage in France soon and taking a fair bit of my kit - scopes, cameras, etc. Can anyone please recommend any insurance company or policy they have used to cover the kit in case it gets damaged / pinched etc?

Many thanks

Bob

Most insurance companies offer Personal Possessions cover as an add-on to your home contents insurance.

Briefly, home contents cover insures your stuff when it's in your house. PP cover insures your stuff when you take it away with you.

Just make sure you take it out of the car whenever practicable, as thefts from foreign plated cars are not rare, especially in touristy areas. (Some lovely person broke in to our car in south of France last Monday - smashed window and took swimming stuff and binocular case, but were so incompetent they missed the spare binoculars and the sat-nav).

The trouble with insurance is they are all very nice before and even after the theft, and will usually pay up. However, the problems start when you renew next year. In my case not a single major company would re-insure me and I had to go to a specialist insurer to get cover (at 3x normal rate). Ask your insurer what their renewal policy is after a claim.
