Problem installing Red Dot (Maksutov 90)

Recommended Posts

I was trying to install a Red Dot that came with a Skywatcher Maksutov 90mm when had some doubts and a possible problem.

The manual says to insert the Red Dot in the telescope support but it seems something is missing or I am not doing this properly.

This is the Red Dot and its two screws:

Now, the mystery...

Only in this way you can fix the Red Dot in this telescope. Perhaps I need to remove the screws from the telescope:

Or maybe something from Red Dot itself is missing?

This Red Dot isn't firmly fixed at all in the telescope, if you touch it, it can move and fall. And with its screws it cannot even be inserted in the way you see from pictures 6 and 7.

I can;t really tell from picture no.1 but it appears that the two detachable plates on the wrong way round. The plates should have a small wedge shaped lip on the inside face which matches the top of the finder mount.

I tried multiple combinations from whatever came with this Red Dot and this is the only way you can fix it into this telescope:

Which means you can't use any screw, at least those that came with it can't be inserted in these holes.

Am I missing something? Is it possible this Red Dot should have come with something else to attach into the telescope?

Hey

I doubt that the screws are meant to be inserted in any holes, they are meant to tighten the bracket to the slot.

Slide the RDF bracket into the slot on the scope, start sliding it from the 'diagonal side' of the scope and use the screws only for tightening.

I contacted the store which sold me the telescope and they instructed me to keep the Red Dot this way:

But unscrew it and then attach both screws again, as you can see from those two pictures they took:

I had to unscrew just a little and then attach both screws again. I had some doubts about this (and when I attached the tube I found that odd as well), because in my mind (specially when you are dealing with this sort of equipment) everything had to be bound together by something more than that. I mean, when you hear a "click" and two parts of the same equipment are bound together, firmly attached to each other. In my mind doing the procedure above was not enough to keep the Red Dot attached to this telescope.

I've got a handle on your problem...I have one of these finders. you are missing the 'shoe' which slides into the slide mechanism which is screwed to your scope barrel.  have a look at some supply sites to see what it should look like. and often these diagrams of the set up procedure  only confuse you....

That's the way it should it fit.
