I was just looking at surveyors tripods, and they do indeed look quite substantial. just wondering about a mount head will attach to it? the ones I am looking at just appear to have a large hole in the top!

You will need to make an Alloy adapter plate for the top of the tripod, depending on the type of head you source. This should not be all that difficult, as you can source small pieces of thick Alloy plate from the Bay :)
