hansu
Would this mount and tripod: http://www.astroshop...ab_bar_0_selectgo with the Skywatcher Skymax 127: http://www.astroshop...ab_bar_1_selectThe specifications on the tripod say that it can handle a 6kg load, and the 'scope is only 3.4kg, so I suppose this tripod and mount would be sufficient?Or should I go for this: http://www.astroshop...d-neq-3/p,14980
emadmoussa
Definitely EQ3 for the mount. EQ2 can handle the Skymax 127 only just...So you're better off with a slightly bigger mount - the EQ3 in this case.the 3.4Kg is only the tube weight I assume - add to that a diagonal and a good finder scope and an eyepiece...these add up. JamesF
Agreed. If you want an EQ mount I'd really not go for anything smaller than an EQ3-2. There are other options if you aren't that fussed if you don't want an EQ mount, but if you wanted to do any imaging the EQ mount will probably make life a bit easier too.James

JamesF
Well, the 127 Mak is ok on an AZ3 though probably rather better on an AZ4 and yes, there's always the possibility of getting it on an alt-az GOTO mount. I recall from another thread that you want something portable though, so it might make sense to try to see them in the flesh first, particularly as you'd have to carry a power source with you if you want a GOTO to be portable.James

John
An AZ-4 would handle a 127mm Mak without any problems - I've used such a set up and it was nice and steady even it high power. The AZ-4 is not a GOTO or even driven of course.
