I post-processed with PSE 11 - used Auto-Levels and then played around with Curves, hue and saturation until it looked reasonably pleasing. I could try again and see whether it can be improved further.

Auto levels is where you went wrong...

Not sure with Elements but when you choose levels in PS these an options box - click on that it opens another pane with different auto options - check the monochrome option and make sure the black clip level is 0.0

Looks good. I was out until 3am capturing data from M27. Haven't got around to processing it yet.

Reprocessed to remove a light frame that had ghosting and used some of the more advanced DSS options and hand tuned the levels in PSE as Francis recommends above:
