Andromeda with mk1 eyeball

They've been doing a gradual phase out of the old orange sodium lamps in Northants and I reckon it's having an effect!

Tonight, from my town centre garden, I swear I can see the Andromeda galaxy with the naked eye. Something I've never been able to do before.

Wish I could say the same... all the sodium lamps in my area have been replaced, and since then I can't see Andromeda.

Most are going for white flourescent light in residential streets.

Plus, looks like some will be radio controlled to be dimmed out during the latter parts of the night.

I saw it last night too from the back garden, had a quick swipe with the binoculars to make sure and there she was. Our sodiums were replaced a few years ago for ones that point downwards, I think it made quite a difference to the sky glow.
