Personally, I've decided society membership is not for me. I've had two poor experiences of local societies and prefer to plough my own furrow, using SGL when I need help. (The SGL get-togethers are absolutely first rate and I'd recommend them, but they only come round two or three times a year).

I'm making very slow progress ie no expert, but you are welcome to come round and have a look at my gear. Send me a PM if you are interested.
