Everything you ever wanted to know about eyepieces, and more

For those ocularholics amongst us (I'm one I must confess) I found this link on the Cloudynights site which is worth a (2.5mb) download IMHO:

It's a comprehensive and highly detailed piece on the development of eyepieces and covers the history and characteristics of many designs (some very obscure !). The author is a chap called Chris Lord and it was written in 1996.

It is highly technical in places but does cover some fascinating topics including the relationship between the eyepiece and the working of human eye which is often overlooked IMHO.

It's not a review piece and it won't tell you which of the latest designs to buy but, for those interested in optical design, it is well worth a read.
