Stellarium running on Ubuntu

I have a desktop that I intend to use in my "tin shed" to run Stellarium. I have always used windows but thought that I would have a change and use Ubuntu as the operating system. This loaded ok and I was very impressed at the speed it connnects to the internet. I thought that would be the difficult part. However I downloaded a linux version of Stellarium and extracted the files but that is as far as I can get. Does anyone use Stellarium in Ubuntu, if so could you point me in the right direction for the version I should be using and any other tips that may be useful.

No problem with Stellarium running on Ubuntu - works a treat. There is a pre-built package in the repositories, much simpler than compiling from source. You can get this through the software centre, or by using the more traditional/quicker command line :

sudo apt-get install stellarium

I'm currently running this on 12.04 LTS, but any of the recent version from 8.04 should be okay.

Shouldn't need it, but good luck anyway...
