Jiggy 67
I'm thinking of investing in a Baader Oiii filter for Dso's. Does anyone have an opinion on them? Are they worth the expenditure?? And what variety of dso are they most useful for? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

rwilkey
Hi Jiggy 67, they are used for bringing out feint nebula such as the Veil and many others. You can also get a UHC (ultra high contrast) filter which has more general use for nebs, the Baader waveband is quite narrow, but i prefer the Sky Watcher as they are broader and let more light in. NB. you need to be at a good dark site with no light pollution or moonglow to get the best of their benefits. Luke
There's a nice list here of DSOs you can use the various filters for:http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=1520I've not used the Baader Oiii so can't say what that's like.My favourite Oiii targets so far are the Orion Nebula (which goes from being stunning to WOW!) and the Veil nebula (which went from almost invisible to clearly visible in our 12 inch dob).I'd really recommend filters, I didn't realise how much they would help! Jiggy 67
Thanks guys, both good replies to make me think, fantastic and informative link Luke, has swung me in the direction of a UHC, simply because, as Robin said, they seem to be a better general workhorse
