Observing Guides

Have always prefered The Monthly Sky Guide by Ridpath+Tirion.

Always seemed more useful then TLAO to me.

Eventually using an observing guide has to stop and you have to select the objects you want, I suppose I find that The Monthley Sky Guide falls closer to this. It tells you wht is prominent and what is in it, after that it is up to you.

Plenty of "advanced" observing guides containing hundreds of objects:

Steve O'Meara's books

The Night Sky Observer's Guide (2 volumes. 3 if you want southern stuff). Lots of big scope objects.

Objects in the Heavens - short and sweet guide

Sue French's Celestial Sampler books (taken from her column in S&T)
