First Solar Scope

Good Morning all

After taking a few pictures through my ED80 with solar filter, I've been looking to get something better for solar viewing.

I've been looking at the Solarmax II 60 with BF 10, however, there seem to be many solormax options, and little description of why I would pick one over the other.

I'd like to attach my Dslr to the back of the scope to take a few pictures, and I can't afford the doublestack version, as its the wrong side of £2k. Is this the correct version of the scope to buy?

Hi NM.

The BF 5 - 10 - 15 number refers to the size of the blocking filter. If you wish to take photos through the scope then the larger BF15 would be the best choice, unfortunately its the most expensive!

Check out the Lunt scopes as well. I like mine (see sig) and images are good (although I've not taken many). It's $1900 with a 12mm blocking filter which you'd need for imaging.

I based my purchase on what Steve Ramsden had to say - there's not about solar that he doesn't know - total solar nut (said in and endearing tone lol). And there's not a lot of solar scopes he hasn't looked through and reviewed. All his links are there including a great website and solar forum:

If you're looking to do photography with it I'd suggest you'd be much better with a camera like the DMK rather than the DSLR.

Yes, that's the one. I did some imaging with a CCD camera at prime focus. Worked well.
