I promised myself a scope last july so procrastination will soon be replaced by 'impulsive' (is that possible after a year?)

Hi Andy and welcome.

I'd say there's never been a better time to buy a 'scope. I don't know how long you've been away from Astronomy but the choice of kit available to the amateur is amazing compared to even a couple of decades ago. From huge Dobsonians to top class refractors with magic glass inside. Digital imaging still astounds me.

As others have said a modest pair of bino's and a planisphere (batteries not required) is a great start. I've built my kit up slowly over many years (not by choice) and think I appreciate it more.
