I was pondering on how you'd use something on this kind of scale the other day. Shinning up ladders really seems like such a bad idea. I fell off a step ladder a couple of years back whilst pruning an apple tree and ended up falling backwards on top of it as it lay on the ground. Fortunately the ground broke my fall, but it made a terrible mess of the ladder. I had to buy a new one :(

Do people ever set them in a "pit", to bring the eyepiece down to a more reasonable height or are there any other common approaches to avoiding the expense of ladder replacement?

I'm sure if someone can afford a 1.3m dob and an observatory to house it, he can easily afford one of this.
