Good reliable alternatives to the Canon timer remote control & battery grip?

Both seem pretty extortionate to me and there are bundles of alternatives, but which are good and which are not. Any experience? Cheers in advance

Im very new to this thing, but i think one alternative to the timer remote control would be to connect your Canon via USB and use programs like Backyard EOS or Astrophotography Tool!

no, i meant just a normal USB cable which, with a program like Backyard EOS, will control your camera from there...
