Image Orientation

Why aren't newtonian scopes mounted with the focuser on the right side of the tube (looking from behind). This would only make the image back to front, like a refractor.

Surely this would be easier, as people with refractors dont seem to complain that they are missing out on the upside down view some of us get.

Another idea would be to use an Erect Image Prism diagonal to give a right side up right way around image.

And maybe Another idea would be to put a diagonal onto the focuser and instead of looking into the tube, you would be looking the same way the tube is pointing.

Obviously the finderscope would have to be mounted on the bottom, but the manufacturers could easily adjust for this if they wanted to.

The way to look at it is, how will rotating the secondary change the image orientation? The light will just hit the mirror and be reflected in the opposite direction.

So the fact that there are two mirrors is what inverts the image?

1 mirror (the primary) inverts, the secondary doesn't.

Don't feel silly Akyra. You only feel silly because you did not know why. Now you do. You have added another bit of knowledge to your memory banks, which, if you keep asking questions, will grow. And, unlike a computer, you will never need to add more gigabytes of ram.
