M82 - SPC webcam

Recommended Posts

Imaged this on the 2nd December but only got the chance to process last night.

Collimation is out and I'm struggling to correct it - so I'm quite happy with this result.

DSS never seems to work right for me (not enough data in the image?) so I used Registax 5.1 (no dark as I get an exception error, so manually removed hot pixels).

22 x 32s exposures.

[Philips SPC 900NC PC Camera (LX Mode)]

Resolution=640x480

Frame Rate (fps)=10.00

Colour Space / Compression=YUY2

Exposure (s)=31.5588562146967

Output Format=PNG files (*.png)

Brightness=64

Contrast=32

Saturation=0

Gamma=21

ColorEnable=255

BacklightCompensation=0

Gain=42

I've included a single sub as well. Am I right in thinking that the brown is caused by the gamma being set too high? (or is it LP?)

Badly over processed I think so any help and advice would be much appreciated :)

Another one from the same night, M42 this time.

This was pretty low in the sky so I hope to try again later in the season when it's a bit higher with longer exposures.

Framing isn't great either, I should have turned the camera to get it in landscape, but all in all I'm quite happy for my first M42 attempt.

40 x 10s exposures. Processed in DSS and PS CS2.

Well done Brent, lots of potential there, especially in the brighter target M42.

Was the focus a little soft perhaps? The stars seem tighter in the M82 image.

When you use a sharpening tool, go easy with it, and if you can just select the target itself, then it will save the background from having the sharpening artifacts like in the M82 image. It actually looks pretty good as a single frame, especially when you consider it is just 10 seconds worth!

Keep it up :)

Tim
