anything better than the canon "nifty fifty"?

iv been looking for one of these for a while, but i dont really like the idea of the mk2 one (unless some one could persuade me better)

im a manual person and like proper dials, all my lens feel like hand granades..... proper metal weight, and the mk2 seems very plasticy

is there a lens thats the same as it or better? it dosent matter about "autofocus" or any fancy electrics or if its made for a different camera (as id just get an adapter, i only want it for manual photos)

but anything better?

The 50mm prime is a good lens. I also use the 85mm prime - great for objective prism spectroscopy!

The Mk1 50mm is certainly built to a far higher standard than the Mk2 version but the image quality from either of them is very good. There is a 50mm f1.4 and f1.2 version which are built to a high stanard but the cost goes up very quickly.

FWIW both the expensive Canon 50mm lenses still have to be stopped down to around f4 for decent stars in the corners... so for astro use its pretty much a no brainer...

The 85mm f1.2 is a nice lens but my favorite is the 200mm f1.8L
