HEQ 5 auto guide speed??

the other night i was struggling getting 50 sec subs so flicking through the setup menu i found this and changed it down to 0.025 i think one stop down from 0.5. and i was then able to get 80 sec subs. just woundering if anyone elese use's this menu option and what they do with it.

If you mean 0.25 that would make sense.

0.25 degrees per minute is the rate that the stars etc rotate, so setting it to 0.25 seems correct.

Rate = 360/24/60 degrees per minute.

Isn't the rate the "fraction" of the sidereal rate thats used for guide corrections? thats how I have interpreted it...

Autoguide speed is the multiple (ie 0.5 = 50%) of siderial rate that the mount will move when it receives a signal from a guiding set-up. So will only have an impact if you are guiding, which I guess at 50 sec subs, you are not.

Seems strange then that he got better tracking by changing to a rate that was twice as bad as it was previously.

It would however make sense to simply have a rate multiplication factor, that way you don't need to know what the rate actually is. Equally I don't see much use of a value less then unity.

Nothing is going at that rate (<1) and if you want to move backwards simply use the handset and drive it backwars.

If you are not guiding I can't see that the guide speed is doing anything at all. The guide speed has no effect on the tracking rate so far as I can see. Just changing anything can give the electonics some kind of random nudge, maybe, and improve things?
