Astro Engineering Laser Collimator Issues

Could anyone give their opinion on a S/H collimator I bought off ABS?

1. The collimator produces one primary and one secondary point of light at any distance greater than 500mm - this is happening inside the laser itself as I removed it from the collimation body to check
   
2. Again, over 500mm distance, the points of light become ellipses about 10-15mm wide.
   

These problems were discovered whilst trying to collimate it before using it in anger on the scope.

Is this fixable, work around-able or should I try and return it?

I'd return it if you can. No point in trying to collimate with an imperfect tool.

Sounds like a duff laser to me. It needs to be replaced.

I fear the same ABS so I've asked the question - will see what the seller will do.

If you do consider trying to contact AstroEngineering then don't bother. In my experience they don't give any support (even advice) if a product is bought second hand. From my experiences with them I'll never buy even a new AE product.
