greasing up the gears

The non-spray one for gears and other bits of mount. The aerosol one will contain propellent and a low viscosity (thin liquid) carrier - the main disadvantage is that an aerosol will get everywhere - mostly in the places you don't want it to go!

Seing as you have both then the pot type.. if on the other hand you only had the aerosol one you could have sprayed it into the lid, let the carrier evaporate off and then use the grease as normal... but you dont get anywhere as much grease in the aerosol tins...
