Off Axis Guiders - Advice Please

Recommended Posts

So having taken the QHY 'plunge' and while I wait for clear skies I am researching the use/setup of guiding. I have 2 SPC's and a Meade DSI II as potential guide cameras. I think its a no brainer to say the DSI is the correct choice here.

But I am not goign to assume anything so please correct me?

I have discounted the idea of a guide scope -

1. For Flexure reason

2. easier to smuggle a OAG into the house :)

So I have

1. C9.25 OTA

2. NEQ6 Pro

3. QHY8 Pro camera

4. 6.3FR with spacers

5. Meade DSI as guide

6. K3 for capture

7. PHD for guiding

Again correct me or advise if the above is lacking???

Just need the OAG and the short list is in desending order

Celestron - £159 - It's made by Celestron e.g. solid

BS Astro - £99 - price

Baader - £119 - price

Atik OAG - £198 - Don't have Atik FW and price

Do I need to conisder any others?

Anyone own any of the above and care to comment?

Thanks for reading,

Justin

You should also look at the Orion and TS OAGs. I have reviewed both in a recent S @ N magazine review alongside the Meade and Celestron units. Atik have recently launched their new offering which looks pretty good on paper and in photographs.

Thanks Steve, I notice on MA's site that the Bright Star is effectively the Orion at least thats what the blurb says

Brightstar make many accessories for famous names and this item is also available as the Orion Deluxe Off Axis Guider.

Accessories @ Modern Astronomy

And probably not a good choice for my C9.25

Thanks again,

Justin

I have the Orion de lux OAG and the SX OAG. The Orion is very good and comes with a useful set of tmount spacers. I needed a slimmer version for my filter wheel so I also got the SX OAG. Both are best setup during daylight to get everything close.
