Photographic learner books

Can any of you recommend a good book for beginners in photography. One that explains frame rates, exposure, gain etc, etc. Looking to get a better understanding of all the terms and why and when you would use them.

Astro Photography. By Michael Covington is very good. It may have been updated since my copy to include Digital stuff, but I don't know.

Do you mean photography in general or specifically astrophotography.

On my coffee table i have

Digital Astrophotography (The State of the Art) by David Ratledge a good book as it covers most types of imagery the i use as well as some stuff that i havent tried yet

I think it would be good to get to grips with photography in general first.....I assume the terms and what they actually do would be similar in both fields? I suppose a sort of Dummies guide...but not... so dummy

As for the astro imaging side I have Photoshop for astrophotographers which i have found invaluble as for the actual camera side...

Err..Apart from the odd magazine and the instruction manual, not much else!
