Great sense of depth to the image Jody - and I really like the SHO colours

Thanks Adrian.  Pretty pleased with this considering the short integration time, the data was great though so seeing must have been good.  Just need to work out how to make the stars pop more in my process, can't seem to fathom a way where they don't get blown out or a bit lost in the mix.

With the 294mm and the 2600 coming out some suddenly thing that the 1600 is rubbish, just not true really is it? Can still more than hold its own.

Thanks for the comment Adam.  It seems like a perfectly acceptable camera to me and keeps the budget managed as 1.25" filters work well.  I think it pairs well with the mid to longer focal lengths too (c1450mm with the EHD8 and reducer).  With all the matched calibration frames the data was a pleasure to work with.  The double fans on the GT version easily keep the temp down as well, I could probably go cooler than -10c but not sure there would be any added benefit.

    I like it. Well done.

Thanks Roy and Sunshine.  It's one of those targets you have to try once if it's available to you!

  2. This is my 2nd mono image using the ASI1600GT and ZWO Ha, OIII filters with the Baader SII filter and my first ever of this target.  Taken with my Celestron EdgeHD8 and the 0.7x focal reducer.

M16 was at about 24 degrees dropping to 20 above my neighbours roof.  Imaged over three nights last week with little to no moon and just enough astro darkness.  Each filter was about 2hrs of integration so 6hrs in total.

Processed in Siril, StarnetV2, Topaz and Gimp.  Using the Py-Astro Plug-in within GIMP I binned the image X3.

    C & C welcome.

A nice image. If that is your first narrowband, well done indeed.

Of the two I prefer the second. It is always tempting to push the stretch as far as you can to show all the swirling mysteries of the background nebulosity. However, the second version shows the primary target better, not oversaturated and with more easily seen details, and makes the surrounding nebulosity a more subtle and background feature. A better overall balance for me.

It is indeed my first.  I've used the L-eXtreme and tried the false Hubble in the past with my OSC camera.  This image was a number of firsts, first Mono-Narrowband and first with an OAG.

I'm sure in time I will refine my mono imaging processing skills in time, OSC is a breeze by comparison!

  4. Hi all.  I recently purchased a 2nd hand ASI1600GT to have a go at mono imaging.  This is my first image, an SHO of the Tulip nebula using the ZWO 1.25 Ha and OIII and a Baader SII (big halos on this filter).  About 4.5hrs on each filter with 5min exposures.  Taken with the Redcat51 and processed with Siril, Gimp, Starnet & Topaz.  The stars were really tricky so I'm not overly happy with them, the colours seemed to shift on each filter so had to spend some time in GIMP with the transformation tool to align them again.

As always I welcome any comments and guidance.

Very nice and offers a very neat solution.

Thought it would be a good start as an intro into Mono.  Bought locally with some 1.25 RGB Lum filters and an OAG for a reasonable price, I like the double fans especially in this heat, they don't work very hard at all.

P.S. I have recently treated myself to a Pulsar pier and Telegizmo cover:

That looks fantastic!  A nice investment meaning a much quicker set up time.  Certainly think your RC will look good atop that, the Redcat looks a little lost, can you piggyback the Redcat on your RC?

  6. +1 for the HOO image.  I prefer the contrast and the colour separation.  A great set of examples though Adrian, I now have and ASI1600GT so will be experimenting soon.  I have some nice data on the Tulip with the Redcat but haven't got round to processing yet.  I need some time to get my head around the mono narrowband process.

Nice image, not sure why you felt the need to go with 10min exposures with the 2600mc though? Especially at f3.

Thank you. I did it just to see how they turned out. I hypertuned the AVX myself a few weeks back so a bit of a test and experiment.  5 minutes would be my normal sub length with the l-ex. Certainly saw that some of the Ha was over exposed following the stack.

Beautiful wide field. Good colours. Focus feels a bit soft when you zoom right in, but as a wide field - fantastic!

Thanks old eyes. Agree on the focus, I haven't rigged an auto focus on this set up yet and was too lazy to stay up and tweak throughout the night!

  9. Taken with my Samyang 135mm Cine lens at about F3 and the 2600mc on my AVX mount.  Included the L-eXtreme as the moon was about and unfortunately that changed my back-focus a bit so some eggy stars are present.  I also pushed the exposures to 10 minutes and took around 9hrs worth.

Processed in Siril, StarnetV2, Gimp and Topaz.

  10. I've been playing with a set up for the Samyang 135mm, I have the cine version.  Here's my first effort with the new rig configuration. I need to sort out an aperture mask rather than stopping down about one step.  Have some squiffy stars in one corner but pretty pleased with this considering it's been taken over the last week with no astro dark, a fair chunk of moon, no filters and all manual focus.

9.5hrs in 5min subs on the AVX with the 2600MC pro.  Processed in Siril, GIMP and Topaz.  If viewed on a calibrated lower backlit monitor some of the subtle Ha is more visible.

I did not know this. I have used Star XTerminator for PS for a while and where is the image with just the stars? I use the original image for bringing back the stars (blend mode Lighten in PS).

My understanding is that you use layers in imaging processing software and subtract your starless image from the image you created the starless from. This just leaves the stars.  You can then control star sizes, colour etc separately.  Pretty sure this isn't an automatic process, although it might be in pixinsight.

Try just stacking only the light just to see if the effect appears , the re stack with darks until you can pinpoint which frames are causing issue

2nd this. Also check your lights to see if there are any frames with thin cloud or dewing of anything in your imaging set up that cause a misty frame. DSS is not very good at checking frame quality. Siril has the edge here with the histogram stretch function. Really highlights poor frames.
