Great photo. This gives me inspiration to try to capture anything close to this once I've got my feet thoroughly wet with my equipment, and in the meantime keep satisfied with the 10" Dob, which I still love using, as there is nothing quite like live-viewing. Thanks for the greeting! -
Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm still negotiating my way through this site and have much to learn yet. I realize my first forum post was rather lengthy, but there was a question at the end no-one has responded to yet, being: I have a 4" dew heater for the scope objective lens, but the 3" heater's best location remains a mystery to me. Is it better on the guidescope objective lens or the camera/field flattener set-up, or elsewhere/nowhere?

Lots of trial and error for sure, and thanks for the vote of confidence. I've had the benefit of experience with a 10" Dob for twenty years, but this is like the difference between checkers and chess, haha. -
First image from new Sky-Watcher Evostar Black Diamond 100mm ED Pro APO Refractor on HEQ5 mount (GPS), taken with Canon T2i unmodified. Scope set-up includes Orion Deluxe Mini 50mm guide scope with Orion StarShoot autoguider. This was about a week ago, the seeing was poor, but I got it between the clouds and after a little contrast adjustment I'm satisfied for a first effort under bad conditions. Just got back my Canon T6i modified and am only waiting for half decent weather to seriously try a few deep sky images. What a delightful chore it's been (and still is) trying to get this rig up and running for deep sky photos, as the learning curve is large and the weather here in eastern Ontario has not been cooperative in the least this latter part of October. Last night (Oct 30) was the first clear night in a week, and though the seeing was poor, it still gave me the chance for a trial run in mount set-up and polar finding with the Synscan, and was subsequently thrilled afterwards to autoslew nearly 180 degrees to find Mars nearly dead centre in my T6i live-view. Though my laptop recognized my HEQ5 mount and Starshoot camera in PHD Guiding 2, I could not bring a star onto the screen to guide with, and will have to look further into alignment and focus. However, I did slew to multiple targets and took 20 second single images of M12, M15, and M31 which, though focus and seeing were a real issue, gives me confidence that with time and patience I will be realizing images worth sharing.
