Earth is Speeding Up!

Does this mean I have to buy a new watch? -
I was thinking of using a Hyperion in an f/7.5 refractor.

Heritage 150 or 127 mak
Zeta Reticulan replied to thestargaze's topic in Getting Started Equipment Help and Advice
I think Astro_Dad has a good point about the finder shoe position. Most Synta Mak's are designed to be used on an EQ mount. Predominantly as Mak's are considered more suitable for lunar/planetary observing. As a consequence the finder shoe is in a position suited to an EQ mount. I managed to obtain a Sky-Watcher 127mm Mak bundled with a Sky-Watcher AZ mount. Although I normally use it now on a Porta II. I've also replaced the bundled 'straight-through' with a reflex sight. Note the position of the dovetail in relation to where the finder is above and below. The only way this can realistically be remedied on most Mak's intended for EQ mounts is by adding a Rigel QuickFinder or using an RACI in the 7 o'clock position. -
Eye relief differences in different people?

I like my 4mm ortho's, but for prolonged observing sessions alternatives can be good. The 4mm Tak' ortho is surprisingly ergonomic to use. Unfortunately Tak' have ceased making their ortho's. -
Eye relief differences in different people?
Zeta Reticulan replied to badhex's topic in Discussions - Eyepieces
It seems to me generally that EP's corrected for faster scopes tend to have more eye placement issues than those not so well corrected. There are exceptions of course. I find the 13mm eye relief on my 19mm Panoptic virtually perfect, and with no other issues. It is 'only' 68 degrees FOV though. It's not surprising it's one of my most used eyepieces. The 82 degree 19mm Luminos is also comfortable to view through. However, it is better suited to slower scopes. The ES 18mm, also 82 degrees, is much better corrected than the Luminos. Although, in use, the ability to rapidly evolve a compound eye might be an advantage. Another factor with modern eyepiece fads is the need for original equipment manufacturers to pander to the 'Magoo Mob'. A lot of manufacturers seem to believe that they won't be able to sell eyepieces that don't have an eye relief anywhere between about 20 millimetres and 6 metres. -
TS Optics / GSO 2" diagonal thumbscrew disaster

I've noticed the same tolerance problem with GSO 2" to 1.25" adapters. Maybe GSO are using a very slightly different metric system lol. -

Yeah, but it's a fantastic nuclear Baader BBHS diagonal. I don't think there's a better 2" mirror on the market. I have the 1.25" version. -

I thought Celestron SCT's were made by Synta now. -

If Zeta Reticulan stuff was that good I wouldn't need Chinese equipment. -

I always wanted an orange tube Celestron SCT. I suppose I could paint my Evolution orange lol. -

I'll take your word for it lol. I'm still leaning towards one huge underground robot factory myself. -

I think my Altair dielectric is KUO, not totally sure though. I'm fairly sure this 1.25" 'Omegon' Amici is Long Perng. As is this 'Baader' 2" Amici. I could be wrong, of course. -

OK, thanks for the link. It's not scrolling on my Chromebook though. I'll have a better look with a different browser. -

Yes, Long Perng makes sense. Their thumbscrews are quite distinctive. You can see them on this Long Perng focuser: I can't find the original Long Perng thumbscrew for my dielectric. The replacement I have used is distinctively different. I have a feeling it was from a borked William Optics (Kunming United Optics?) diagonal. I actually managed to obtain another thumbscrew for my 'Sky-Watcher' Long Perng aftermarket focuser. The focuser originally only had one screw in the visual back. I'd honestly once considered replacing these with GSO screws as I find the LP screws a bit small and finicky. Hence why I wanted two in the visual back. -

I don't use this Sky-Watcher dielectric much. It was originally bundled with my 80 ED DS Pro. I use it with my ST80 as it's relatively light compared to my other 2" diagonals. There's nothing wrong with it optically. 2" Diagonal Comparative Weights: Baader Zeiss Amici: 650g APM Amici: 600g Altair dielectric: 525g Baader (Long Perng) Amici: 455g Tele Vue Everbrite: 455g (without adapter) Baader Maxbright Dielectric: 425g Sky-Watcher dielectric: 390g The 'possible potty' GSO screw is on the left. I've used it for quite a while in the SW diagonal, mainly as I didn't really like the original screw. I have no idea what the screw on the right was originally for. It probably isn't potty metal though. Either way; it fits, it looks and feels good, and works. -

I'm guessing those other members don't have draggy cats. I have cats, but they aren't real. They don't drag stuff in and I don't have to feed them. Their mission and purpose however, is classified. -

I've never had a GSO thumbscrew fail, but I did change the GSO screw I'd put on my Synta 2" dielectric back to another non-GSO screw. I quite liked the new GSO screws, until I read this thread. 🤯 -
