I wouldn't rely on plate solving to frame a target unless it had a lot of empty sky round it and I was aiming to crop anyway.

I can't say I've had much problems with framing and getting precise centering. Have you ever used or seen NINA being used with its framing wizard? It shows you how your target will look. You can move the FOV around and change the rotation and the corresponding coords will change based on where you position it. Once your happy with it you can set those coords as your intended target. If your mount is good enough, it will centre it to within a few pixels.

Thank you David. Very helpful information. Did you get any further with the condensation issue under the cover?

Yes, I just leave a spare dew strap turned on 24/7. Turned inside out and wrapped around the Dec axis. Since adding a Pegasus Powerbox I just set it to auto dew but prior to that I just turned it up to full on the dew controller. Either way, no more condensation on the mount, scope etc

Cheers, makes a lot more sense now. You’ve probably saved me the simultaneous best and worst case scenario with your advice!

Would the m12 bolt be a standard bolt from screwfix or would it require a more exotic thread?

Standard M12. I bought a pack from B&Q around 60mm or so. It would depend on the depth of the brake disc, assuming you went down that route. I bought a pair of rear discs for a 2006 1.4 Golf. Think the inner bore needs to be 65mm for the AZEQ6 to sit into. I used a piece of 10mm stainless steel bar to bridge the recess under the disc in order to hold the mount down. Tightened up after polar aligning and its been solid since.

  4. @Stuart1971 Yes! It works! Stating the obvious, I know, but I run a CAT5 ethernet cable from the pier to the mini PC in the shed via a Startech USB2 hub. I was concerned this may flag up a USB issue with the UPB but after some testing down the shed it works a treat. Even with all USB2 devices in the UPB USB3 hub. Well impressed with it!

  5. They're changed every couple of days or so with updates, bug improvements etc Each revision should be an improvement on the last, or so that's the idea anyway. As above, the latest is 2.0 beta 29. I don't run into many issues and I keep up with the updates.

Or there is the stable version 1.10 HF3 though this doesn't receive any updates.

  6. I have my mini pc setup so it starts windows without the need to sign in or enter a password. When the home WiFi is not detected it automatically connects to the hotspot on my phones Internet. I have used this out in the field. The initial setting up requires a monitor (hdmi connection to a TV will do) to set everything up but only needs doing once. Once connected to your phones hotspot, you can then control via VNC.

  7. I had a bit of a mishap at the weekend with some blown fuses. Luckily no damage to any equipment but its made me look at a Pegasus Powerbox to safely control power to my kit. Emailed RVO on Sunday about stock. Adam responded Monday morning to say they had stock. Order placed. Parcel arrived well packaged on Tuesday. Can't ask for better service than that. Thanks RVO!

    Yes….all the way…

they are constantly tweaking the software with new features and it just works, support is great too….the way I look at this part of my kit is that it can’t let me down, no power or USB and your kit is a giant doorstop, it needs to work and you need to not have to worry about it, buy cheap buy twice….👍🏼

Thanks. I like the idea of being able to switch off the individual power ports. Also, I get the odd USB gremlin that needs them to be unplugged/plugged to cure it. Am I right that they Ultimate one can toggle those off individually as well?

  9. Oops! I've had a bit of a scare tonight! Managed to blow 2 fuses in my 12v banana plug type distributor! I have something similar to this below, separate channels power everything, one channel for mount and another channel for camera, focuser, dew controller. With the Atik 460, even when PC is powered off, the fan still runs. So I've been disconnection the power cable to the Atik after every session before I cover up. Switched everything on this evening and connected the cable, it blew 2 fuses in the power strip! Luckily enough no damage to anything as I switched over to 2 of the spare channels and everything is ok. But its making me think about one of these Pegasus boxes. They really worth the investment? @Stuart1971

  10. The big thumbscrew is used for adding tension to the focuser. If you focused manually you would tighten this down to hold the position. Its typically removed when adding an aotofocuser bracket. The 2 x M4* bolts hold the focusing assembly to the scope. You can remove these and actually spin it around so the knobs are on opposite sides of the scope. Handy if your left handed etc. This is the same focuser I have had on every refractor Ive owned (apart from Redcat). I use a DeepSkyDad AF3 and he does a bracket that will fir this exactly. You wont even need to remove the 2 x M4* bolts as he uses the grub screw holes and the thumbscrew hole.

    * I think their M4 from memory *

Apologies- I thought i had read that but turns out i was confused with Pegasus thread. They’re likely Chinese but even Chinese HDs aren’t cheap. My post was really about the hope for cheaper strain wave gearboxes in the near future.

Am I reading this correctly? The single error, is that seconds in time along the bottom? So from 40.6 to 41.6 there is a near 30 arc second deviation and this repeats every 2 seconds??

  12. Hi Andy. This tutorial is a couple of years old now but I believe the layout in APT is still the same so should get you up and running.

    https://stargazerslounge.com/topic/334568-setting-up-platesolving-in-astrophotography-tool-apt/

I use NINA mostly now as its a bit more advanced, probably a bit bloated with features if I'm being honest but APT is the better platform if your using a DSLR as its far better supported.

  13. As above, PayPal is nowhere near as good as paying with CC as their payment protection is entirely at their own discretion and judgement and its not covered under consumer law. With a credit card, the CC company is just as liable as the vendor. So if HOUK were no longer trading, then the CC company would be liable for the debt in the above circumstance.

183mm pro. If it is the sensor can I use anything to clean it with or leave it be? Just looked at the camera earlier, front window could do with a clean.

Start with that at least. Take some flats as that should also pick them up. Hopefully it's just dust and lint particles on the cover glass.
