  1. If rumours are to be believed RPI Charity is NOT going to be producing new boards and is going to concentrate on "Software" - sad if that is true - will wait and see. Yep there are plenty of Chinese boards all with rubbish support. I always look at the Forum (if they have one) first to get an idea what they are like - its a pain.
  2. Fedora 28 (comes from Red Hat) is no any better than over flavours BUT 1. It has a very nice installation (for USB or DVD ISO) program you can download - if you run it under Windows it will even suggest a version of Fedora to try - https://docs.pagure.org/docs-fedora/how-to-create-and-use-live-usb.html 2. It has a 64bit version for Arm8 which I will try out on a RPI 3b+ 3. The 64bit version of Fedora 28 runs Indilib/Kstars well - if you follow the installation notes for Fedora on IndiLib.org site. 4. Use Xrdp is you want to run remotely - I had problems getting any other VNC/RDP to work - most connected but should a black screen and a white cursor - tried every suggestion but none improved Gnome. Note on Xrdp dont login on Fedora and then try and connect - it requires the Fedora user to be logged out. 5. There is not a lot of rubbish installed but the "Activities" route is quite nice - IMHO. Which ever version you use Good Luck - and ask if you get stuck - I do and I should know what I am doing ? LOL
  3. RPI3 B+ doesn't they changed it - if what I read is true. As for Camera speeds what is your camera and what sort of speed do you achieve with your RPI3 ??
  4. That's just security - just like Windows ACL. It too can be switched off. But the software guys all have a " bee in their bonnets" because users moan about being secure - I feel sorry for them they are between "a rock and a hard place"
  5. Sorry thats not correct - I use Sandisk Ultra and it out perform the mechanical 160gb Samsung sata 3 disc - it flies. Anyway its a case of putting "fast" files in the appropriate place and "slow/infrequently " files on the slowest part of the system. After all once booted a lot of boot files are not used again. Yes a pain but if I wanted a supercomputer I would buy a Cray (google it people). Mount driving is very light on CPU/Disk usage and are Focuser's. OK image files are heavy but they come down relatively slow routes compared to SSD fast Sata channels (yes it depends on architecture). Post processing ,IMHO, is not what most want from the "MOUNT COMPUTER" (well I don't) I want less wires !!!!!!!! - there are plenty of real time file copying apps on Linux (even Windows) that will transfer in background to the "Supercomputer". But if that is what you want then it will cost you and a RPI3/Rock64 are no comparison o an I7,16gB ram,2 x 512ssd all in a small factor - £500 approx - that's £500 quid that could go bang. I except time lags myself - but thats me and my opinion . Update on my Grab and Go Indi style - after a great start it went down hill all because the SkywatcherALTAZ indi driver is very poor at ,what IMHO is something simple, Mount Parking or the lack of - No matter what this driver insists on starting from the S not N and PARK doesn't work. So I had to stick in the old handset(using v3.94) and use the Synscan Indi driver - it all went great and even Platesolving (ok via Internet - asking RPI3 to do this offline is a step too far) sync, aligment etc went great. Note the Synscan Handset doesn't do anything (or I should say you dont) except I use it to PARK as even the Synscan Indi driver has problems "Parking" - Bug I believe. After the changed to the Synscan Indi driver / Handset I had 1.5-2hrs of carefree running using RPI3 wireless connected,Synscan Handset,Canon DSLR with std lens plus a car battery. All controlled remotely using Realvnc server on the PI and Vncviewer on an Old Vista laptop. Its getting there and this time next year I hope to have my Obsys converted to Indi of all the small glitches are ironed out. Clear Skies
  6. Yep - but a lot here wont to get away from M/S - far away. Plus you can not use W10 on a RPI3 B (not full w10) . But for esting you are 100% correct and maybe a way for some LOL
  7. Sorry its a clear night here so I am off to set up my main obsys now - clear skies where ever you are Ladies and Gents - are we allowed to say that these days LOL
  8. And using the platesolver (online on this occasion) in Indi Lots of things you can do all with a single window - this is all running on a RPI3 B (not B+) and I am using VNCviewer from a Windows Vista Laptop (over 10yrs old)
  9. And here we have it Indi / Linux up and running on my Grab and GO (Old SWAZ)
  10. That's what I thought! And thats why some of us wanted a separate heading for OS for Astro (or such like) where things could be "shared" ?
  11. And you an EX MSC systems engineer LOL - its not for geeks its how things were done BEFORE the Internet - even on early M/S OS. Its like my daughter she depends on Sat Nav even to visit us ,god help her if it stops working and she (and many others) have to read a map. If you were brought up doing these things because that was the reality that is just the way it HAD to be done no other option. To be honest you need to be honest with yourself - if its not you or don't fancy doing it fine -then may I humbly suggest you buy ASIair or Stellarmate which provides everything on a plate if you like the idea - armchair Linux if you will. Its no big deal if you go Linux or not as the aim of us all is to do astronomy isn't. But I do see many here that moan about "not another M/S upgrade" etc and so Linux could be an option but as I say be true to yourself. Its your choice !!!
  12. No problem your opinion - but its not "half baked" but agree Canon might encompass Linux after all even Apple Mac OSX are based on - Unix/Linux. ? Clear Skies
  13. Not quite true - yes Canon apps aren't on Linux but Canon Dslr via Indi seems now to be working quite well - ok a few bits and bobs are quirky but for Astro work Kstars/Ekos/Canon DSLR is , and I was a big critic, working well. Plus as it is ,running on RPI3 (in my case), it is fully wireless on all canon dslr that work under Kstars/Indi even if they aren't wireless - try saying that about Windows and I use APT/BYEOS but they can' do that. Subject to limitations Kstars/Indi is coming of age ,IMHO, it just needs to stop trying to be "all things to all men". As for gaming we are talking cheap SCB to run Astro Stuff so yes Gaming is not supported well by Linux by thats not what we are refering too here - in my book anyway
  14. I know its going to open a can of worms but maybe besides tutorials we could start holding Images of std Astro Operating set ups(Mint/Ubuntu etc) with a minimal tutorial to get people going who are a bit "iffy" - Comments/Ideas ? Guess FLO would not be too happy it might bump into ASIair sales - Why dont FLO offer Stellarmate anyway - commercial reason - no offence FLO just speaking aloud!
  15. SINIX sounds about right for Nixdorf - the old Midland Bank group used them a lot at one time. Good old days LOL ?
  16. I think both were Bill's - he earned his money doing IBM DOS which he invested into M/S - gave him "credence"
  17. You are of 100% course correct but the cheapest before Free Linux was the SCO,which i used, which was still expensive - even before M/S took them over to sue Linux. AIX was another Unix on IBM, [removed word] ,Singer/ICL, ATM's makers (Honeywell and ? another big USA lot now defunct ) etc etc but hey were mainstream and cost. As far as I remember ,programmed them both, Texas Mini (990's ?) and Micro(910) neither had Xenix - but memory plays tricks or different series machine Ha Ha
  18. Thats because thats where Linux came from it was a rewrite - written to use the i386 chip as "main stream" Unix players (Bell etc) didn't do an I386 version (I386 was cheap). And before MSDOS there was CDOS(C/CPM) which ran a windows environment (Not M/Soft) and could be networked together - which was a descendant of CPM - none of this easy stuff - lots of switches ,Interrupt settings - and that was just on the device LOL. It was a pity CDOS didn't beat MSDOS/IBM(PS/2) as it was way ahead - but just proves,IMO, the best tech does not win in business. But then DOS was known as "Dirty Operating System" LOL I perhaps understand why Indi charges for Stellarmate OS but I dont agree especially as the h/w is from a charity and the software (Ubuntu/Indi) is free - Now if they went public and "crowd funded" then maybe things would progress faster IMHO. I do understand Indi Jasem Mutlaq supports Stellarmate OS so I guess he has to be rewarded for his hard work/time ? Lets face it those who have a working Ubuntu version on RPI (or other SCB / variants) could just pass on their working images for others to write to a SD Card and start using with very little changes. More people would try Indi - maybe! +1 for the thread
  19. Totally agree and if your like it then use the same to install as it gives you both options - try or install. IMHO For the record Indi is not a panacea - it has many failings and the Doc is poor - fact. E.G. Does work with SW AZ (inc AZ GTI) mounts UNLESS you use Synscan App on Windows or Android LOL - whats the point of that. SW EQ mounts should be ok as that's been well tested ! Kstars I like!!! Good Luck worth a try - Clear Skies !!!
  20. Are you thinking of Integrating Indi server connection - Indi has a massive black hole when it comes to "real working Linux" DSLR(canon) support. I suspect Windi might work ,as a Ascom/Indi server on Windows , for your Windows Ascom driver but I was think more of a Linux Ascom/Indi driver?
  21. Still not a easy step but depending on your OS version and PC spec(plenty memory reqd) you could use a virtual Linux to get the feel. However its been some time since I have done this to know if Kstars etc would run ok under Virtualbox - guide on how to and some VM's here https://www.osboxes.org/guide/ Kstars did run under Luduntu Virtual Machine (VM) perhaps someone who has done this more recently can comment . In effect you start Windows (10 for example) as normal no changes required and then run the VM under its controller (e.g. VirtualBox) - So it wouldn't screw up (tech term) your Windows Bios etc.
