We have had issues in the past where members have edited their posts and replaced all the text with a full stop.
This version of software doesn't allow us to see post edit history, so the compromise was to allow members to edit their won posts once they reach 250 posts.
But even then it's limited in time.
The member ranks is just a bit of fun and actually signifies nothing at all except the number of posts made.
Cheers

I used VNC, which works particularly well with thee iPad and windows7.
That's free and works over a LAN.

Yes that is often an issue with text based communication, I am surprised that being a mod of another large astro forum you haven't come across it before.I seem to have the happy knack (to borrow a phrase from Jane Austen) of being unable to make known that I'm being jocular rather than sarcastic or sneering (so I'm told).
You don't need to learn HTML. Just these two : ) put together without spaces give youI've been advised to use emoticons to elucidate my prose.
Sadly my emoticons seem to be absent on my smartphone without going to full version.
Maybe I should take the trouble to learn html.

Happy days

Hi John, it'll use whatever you have.
My laptop doesn't have a decent graphics card either

I've been lucky enough to kick the iOS app's tires, trying to brake it etc. I think you'll like it when it's released

Hi Jackstay,
We do have section for at least some of the things you mention below.
So far the reception has been great. While this is a forum and is certainly a reservoir of knowledge, it's not the same as being around other astronomers.
1) I would personally like to see postings for star parties around the globe. Perhaps have a "Star Party" section that then breaks into subsections of continents then further into nations, etc. so us beginners have an ability to connect face-to-face with astronomers. Are there local clubs in our area? How do we contact them?
We have a section on star parties here - http://stargazerslounge.com/forum/45-star-parties/
2) Many of us know very little about where the good sites are in our area to observe. Any details on dark sites in our area would be a tremendous tool to keep new astronomers engaged and not depressed by the poor views as seen through city skies.
We sort of have area for this - http://stargazerslounge.com/forum/165-observatories/ which includes some dark sky sites.
Also the social groups section has groups in some areas, - http://stargazerslounge.com/forum/103-social-groups/ but we've not looking at setting up any fresh groups.
3) A sticky note on what telescopes to purchase based on a new astronomers wants and constrains are. Whether they be location, budget, portability, etc. Some sort of chart perhaps. This is not to take away from the section which already exists that aids new astronomers to get pertinent questions answered. It will, however, cut down on the amount of people becoming confused by what can be a very arcane and obtuse hobby.
Trouble with that is that everyone has specific requirements and advice that is good for one isn't good for another. It's easier and more specific for people to just post what their exact requirements are and we help them spend their money - it's almost as good as spending our own money

Thanks Shane.
The collimation PDF is downloaded and currently sitting on the printer.
If I can work out collimation it will be a modern day miracle

Facebook? As far as I'm concerned, its the largest internet rubbish dump in the world. Taking anything from this group and thinking its true/accurate makes as much sense as learning something from a rock. This (post, not the poster) is just an example of what's happening in this group - the blind leading the blind
And don't bother to respond to this reply - I'll be busy for some time taking some lessons from a rock in my back yard (garden)
They probably feel the same about you.
Just because you don't like Facebook doesn't mean that your right. There are some really good science and astronomy pages on Facebook. I belong to a couple myself.
There is a saying here in the UK that goes something along the lines of "if you cannot say something nice, don't say anything"

And in a few months Robbo, you'll be dishing out the advice to the new members helping SGL to be the great place it is

Is it in the primers and tutorials section? That's a sub board of this one and just above this thread on the screen?
Lowezone if you post your question into the equipment help section far more people will read it and hopefully be able to help you out.

Lol, always been a sticky.
The more the merrier I'm beta testing the Seti@home on android at the moment.

I had a very similar issue, absolutely did my head I.
I tried light heating, cooling in a freezer, rubber gloves, rubber grippy tin / jar openers. Everything I could think off.
The someone on here, Peter, I believe suggested the soles of trainers...
Get one shoe turn it upside down, place the adapter on the sole, then get the other one and put sole down on top. Then apply pressure to the face of the adapter and turn.
Took a few attempts but worked a treat.
Hope that helps.

I agree that this sort of information is interesting and I find that most do post information. Where they don't there is no harm in asking the question

I had the privilege to be the first to read (proof read) this guide, it really is a very good read.
I had no idea that images that could could be taken with a dob. I'm going to make it a sticky.

Great site, keep up the good work folks. Have not seen a cross word anywhere.
Wish I could say the same for other forums lol http://www.landyzone...oss-124709.html
Thanks for the kind words, just for the record... If anyone spoke to anyone like that (including me) here, the admins would almost certainly ban that person. It goes against everything we strive for

Very odd Gaz, never seen anything like that myself.
I know that you are a very experienced observer so have no trouble at all in believing what you saw, but I can offer no explanation whatsoever.
Maybe the object had a small chemical reaction as it burnt away and that caused a sudden sideways shift, but 90 degrees is hard to explain...?

Yeah, SGL had some issues with people editing posts and changing the content to just a single full stop. Which I'm sure you'll agree causes a few issues with the threads becoming unreadable.
When you get to 50 posts you can edit posts, but only for a short period of time (think it might be half an hour...).
Cheers
