A New Way of Reducing Stars in Photoshop
MartinB replied to Xiga's topic in Imaging - Image Processing, Help and Techniques
I must be on the wrong wavelength here completely. You can't have "no blend mode" except for the background layer. The default is "normal" which would effectively block the background. I suspect I'm missing something very obvious here!!- 32 replies

Thank Clarin. I think I must be doing something wrong here (not at unusual). So a star obliterated colour image at the bottom. A luminance on top of this - What are you using as the blend mode for this layer?- 32 replies

I'm a bit confused. If the starless layer is at the bottom i.e. the background image you can't set a blend mode. Is the starless image on top of the background image?- 32 replies

I've been using EF, not EF-S. I'm probably doing something stupid, as usual.

I have a Geoptic and couldn't fit a 2" filter with my Canon lens although I may be doing something stupid. Almost fits but not quite. However, Astronomic make T2 filters which fit nicely between camera and adaptor. I have an Ha and CLS and they give me just enough back focus. I have found the adaptor quiet awkward to use in practice, I don't think you could get away with a filter wheel so filter changing is a big issue, I have only used with OSC. Also you can't rotate your camera so I use a geared head which makes things a bit more clumsy. I suppose that's only the same as you would if using a DSLR

Jez, I have am lucky enough to have both a mono and an OSC astro camera. I have used the OSC a few times, on carefully chosen, broad band targets, and have been pleased with the results. However, despite having a smaller sensor my mono camera has had far more use. It is my goto camera. I now only tend to use the OSC if I need the benefit of the larger sensor. I find mono quicker, more flexible and a world ahead when it comes to narrow band. I could go into great detail as to why this is the case but there is plenty of discussion on this already

That's some result from a little guide camera!

Coming back to this 8 years on I would say that an IDAS filter will reduce transmission a little. The most significant change however is the reduction in sky glow. As a result of this you need to expose for longer before sky glow swamps the effect of read noise.

Sky Watcher 18" StarGate first review
MartinB replied to raanany's topic in Member Equipment Reviews
It's very surprising and disappointing. I've always found SW kit well put together, built to a price but perfectly functional. What you've shown seems well below that standard. I too would be interested to here updates. BTW the spiral structure of M31 is a challenge even with an 18" scope unless you have a nice dark sky. -

Pulsar Observatories 2.2m Dome and Shelyak Dome Tracker
MartinB replied to dmahon's topic in Member Equipment Reviews
Sorry to bump this. I have a 2.7m Pulsar dome which is motorised. Bought it 5 years ago so the motor doesn't come with any encoder. I presume I would need to change to motor if I wanted to link to the mount but I can usually get the dome rotation about right. The biggest problem I have is that I can't do an automated meridian flip because the change in position of the scope after the flip means I'm imaging the inside of the dome. Does this set up allow automated flips? If it does then I might be looking at an upgrade!- 22 replies
