EQ6 Tripod Mod For Mesu

Singlin

Recommended Posts

we have our local star Party coming up and want to take my Mesu.

My Mesu normaly sits on a steel pier in my Observatory.

I downloaded the pdf file of the dimensions of the top plate of the EQ6

http://www.nightskyimages.co.uk/eq6_dimensions.pdf

Their are already two 10mm holes in the top plate for the AZ fence posts.

I drilled another two 10mm holes and tapped 10mm thread in them.

I then drilled four 10mm holes  43.5mm away from the center of my Mesu Base Plate and counter sunk the holes.

My Mesu base plate is a bit of a mess as a white marker pen broke and spilled white ink all over the plate, the patch is where i cleaned it off.

I then placed 12mm washers on the original tripod center shaft bolt that will allow me to tighten the tripod legs without protruding into the EQ6 tripod base plate.

I then screwed the Mesu Base plate on to the EQ6 base plate with four 20mmx12mm bolts.

I was under the impression that a MESU could connect directly to a NEQ6 tripod head as a direct replacement?  Thats what it said on Steve Richard's S@N review here  ???

Mounting plate

A supplied optional mounting plate allows you to attach the MesuMount 200 to a pier, but – recognising that it is a natural upgrade to the popular NEQ6 mount – the plate has been drilled and countersunk so it can be installed on an EQ6 tripod or compatible pier head. The plate also retains the azimuth adjustment post

Isn't the key word there 'optional'? Perhaps Singlin didn't have the plate so it was easier to make the changes himself?

Lucas made my plate with holes on the outside to bolt onto my pier so I asume that it is not stock.

However the link below shows the stock base plate with no extra holes for the EQ6.

You would still need to bore two extra holes on EQ6 top plate if you want Four bolts instead of two to fix your Mesu plate to the EQ6.
